In this play, the Renaissance motifs of masculine freindship and romantic love are portrayed in opposition to the bitter inhumanity of a usurer named Shylock. Although the play ends happily for everyone except the revengeful Shylock, it is not a light-hearted edy. On the surface, Shakespeare's view of Shylock reflected the attitudes of the day.
