不可以。若将the English改为that，则that指代old English，这样一来，句子的本意就变了。如果将前面的old English改为the English they spoke in ancient times，则后面可以用that指代the English。即：The English they spoke in ancient times is quite different from that we speak in modern times.人们在古代使用的英语与我们今天使用的英语大不相同。
